River Oaks

 The affluent innerloop neighborhood of River Oaks is located south of Buffalo Bayou, and east of Shepherd Drive. It is located next to the subdivisions of Avalon Place, and Royden Oaks. The community spans 1,100 acres with the majestic River Oaks Country Club located in the north part with its manicured greens and golf course designed by Donald Ross.

River Oaks was established in the 1920’s by the famous Hogg family. The neighborhood became a well-publicized national model for community planning. River Oaks is one of the wealthiest communities in Texas, and one of the wealthiest zip codes in the United States. Real estate values in this luxury neighborhood from $750,000 to over $20 million. The schools zoned to River Oaks are River Oaks elementary, Lanier Junior High School, and Lamar High School.

River Oaks is most famous for the Boulevard which starts at Lamar High School and ends at River Oaks Country Club. There are multi-million dollar mansions located on both sides of the street. The homes resemble the grandest antebellum homes of the old south. These mansions are surrounded by oak trees planted in the 1930’s, and azaleas with their pink and white flowers. Each spring the River Oaks Garden Club conducts their Azalea Tour of some of these grand homes and gardens. For the last 75 years this event signals the start of spring in Houston.
