Professor Stephen Klineberg has spent 30 years measuring the economic and demographics of Houston. His team found that Harris County residents believe the economy is slightly better than last year. However they are not very optimistic about the country’s future. Houstonians feel that local crime, air pollution, and traffic times have improved. They enthusiatebly believe that Houston is the best place to live in the United States. Houston has prospered with the influx of immigrants which added to the city’s ethnic diversity.
General Conclusions from The Kinder Report 2011:
The new pro-growth agenda
To prosper in the high-technology, knowledge based global economy, this city (and nation) will need to nurture a far more educated workforce and fashion policies that can reduce the growing in inequalities and prevent the ride of a new urban underclass.
To attract the most innovative companies and talented individuals, Houston will need to grow into a more environmentally and aesthetically appealing urban destination, and develop the research centers that will fuel the engines of growth in the new economy.
If this region is to flourish in the twenty-first century, it will need to develop into a much more unified and inclusive multiethnic society, one in which equality of opportunity is truly made available to all area residents and all of its communities are empowered to participate as full partners in shaping the Houston future.
The future:
Professor Klineberg sees a changing world economy. He summed up what is happening with the rhyme, “Not the decline of the west, but the rise of the rest.”
