Sharpstown is a 4,000 acre tract of land located in southwest Houston off Highway 59. The subdivision was developed by Frank Sharp and his partners who bought the land in 1954 for a housing development of 15,000 homes. Frank Sharp offered to donate a 300-foot-wide right-of-way strip through Sharpstown for the construction of the southwest freeway. The crown jewel of Shsarpstown was to be an air-conditioned Shopping Mall. The freeway was the heart of Sharpstown as it would provide a way for customers to come to the mall, and residents of Sharpstown a drive quickly to work in downtown Houston. Sharpstown was a master planned community which had hospitals, golf courses, high-rise living, apartments, and commercial development.
Greater Sharpstown District
The District of 10-square-miles is located in Harris County and is bordered by Hillcroft on the east, Beltway 8 on the west, Westpark Tollway on the north and U.S. 59 / Bissonnet on the south.
The Greater Sharpstown Management District was created by the Texas Legislature in June 2005 to enhance the physical, social, and economic well being of the Sharpstown community. It is a governmental entity administered by a nine-member, all volunteer board of directors. Projects and services of the district are funded through 6-cents per 100 hundred dollar HCAD evaluations assessment that generates approximately $1 million in annual revenues in 2009.
In February 2007, the board of directors adopted an five-point Service and Action Plan to address Sharpstown’s mobility and transportation planning, environmental and urban design elements, health and public safety initiatives, and business and economic development. Since then, the district has taken direct action to fulfill the goals outlined in this plan. The mission of the District is to attract and supplement public and private capital investment, provide professional management of the area’s needs and maintain the Greater Sharpstown District as a premier place to work, live and invest.
