Best schools in Greater Houston 2012

April 28, 2012 billedge

Houston Best Students
Children at Risk ranked 1,196 public elementary, middle, and high schools in the Greater Houston area.  The rankings were based on TAKS scores, attendance, SAT scores and other factors.  HISD swept the top three positions for elementary, middle and high schools.   Among the largest districts in the area, Katy, Clear Creek and Pearland ISDs performed the best, with at least 78 percent of their campuses ranked in the top half.   Bob Sanborn, the president of Children at Risk, said “To get the best out of public education, you can no longer just go to the neighborhood school,” he said. “You have to be a little more assertive and look for the school that works for your children.”
HISD had some of the best schools and some of the worse.  Twenty Nine percent of the HISD schools fell in the bottom category.  Apollo reform members Sharpstown and Lee High school both improved this year.  Lee High School is a good example of what can happen when the community becomes involved.  The alumni of Lee High School organized two years ago when their school was on the list of schools in danger of being closed by the state.  The Alumni worked hand in hand with the school administration to improve Lee.  Volunteers planted trees, tutored, gave scholarships, and even helped organize a football program for Lee.
