Houston Heights

Historic Living in Houston Heights

With a long history and many historic homes and buildings, Houston Heights is one of the Houston area’s more appealing areas. If you’re in the market for Houston real estate and want to live in one of the historical districts in the greater Houston area, then consider adding Houston Heights to your preferred neighborhoods list.

History

As one of the earliest master planned communities, not just in Houston but in the entire state, Houston Heights has a rich history that dates back to 1891. At that time, millionaire Oscar Martin Carter encouraged a group of investors to start the Omaha and South Texas Land Company. The Company purchased a 1,756 acre plot of land and began to develop the entire infrastructure the community would need, including schools, parks and utilities in addition to streets.

Houston Heights Homes For Sale

From its earliest days, Houston Heights was created as a suburb of Houston designed for those who wanted to be near the city, but not in it. In 1919 it was annexed by the City of Houston, and today it remains a neighborhood within the city that has its own unique temperament.

From its earliest days, Houston Heights was created as a suburb of Houston designed for those who wanted to be near the city, but not in it. In 1919 it was annexed by the City of Houston, and today it remains a neighborhood within the city that has its own unique temperament.

In 1973, residents and business owners organized the Houston Heights Association, which is dedicated to preserving the historic character of the community and maintaining the quality of life for the residents. In the 1990s, their efforts paid off, as young professionals began to flock to the historic community.

What Makes the Heights Area Special

The Heights sits four miles to the northwest of downtown Houston just inside Loop 610. Even though it’s part of Houston, it feels like a separate community. Hike and bike trails encourage residents to get outdoors, while Victorian era buildings lining the streets point to the rich history of the region. In fact, many people will visit Houston Heights just to walk along Heights Boulevard to see these historic buildings.

Yet, history is not all that draws people to this Inner Loop community. The nightlife in The Heights is some of the best in Houston. You can also find eclectic boutiques, antiques shops and local restaurants all lining the business district in the Heights, which is between 19th and 20th streets. Interestingly, this business district looks much the same as it did 60 years ago.

The Heights is located 4 miles northwest of downtown Houston just inside Loop 610.   The Heights is still like a small town community.   There are shops and businesses where third generation owners are continuing in their father’s footsteps.  The business area of the Heights located on 19th and 20th streets looks today just like it did 60 years ago.  The boulevard with its walking path in the middle is used as meeting grounds for the many residents. The most historic part of Houston, the Heights streets are dotted with magnificent Victorian homes, featuring balconies, gables, and large porches.  The Heights boasts some of the best night life in Houston along with boutiques, antique shops, and restaurants.   Whether you walk, bicycle, or jog the houses are fantastic and worth walking down the middle of Heights Boulevard to see.
