Montrose

A True “Bohemian” Area in Inner Loop Houston

Montrose is a comfortable residential neighborhood in Neartown, Houston. As a central hub of the community, it’s often been called the Heart of Houston. It’s also regularly listed as one of the best neighborhoods in America, making it an ideal place to consider in your search for Houston real estate.

Montrose History

In 1911, J. W. Link and the Houston Land Corporation platted a planned community and streetcar suburb in what is now Montrose. Link believed Houston was going to grow, and wanted Montrose to lead the way. His gamble paid off, and by 1926 the community was ready for its first hotel and Houston’s first apartment hotel, the Plaza Apartment Hotel. Here, many of Houston’s great leaders found their residence. Soon Houston spread to Montrose and beyond.

The counter culture hit Montrose hard in the 1960s and 1970s, which led to its Bohemian feel today. This lead to the creation of the Westheimer Colony Art Festival and the Westheimer Street Festival, which are both still important events of the community. As the 1980s came and went, music, including rock, punk and the blues, became important as the community developed an artistic flair. In recent years, remodeled mansions and upscale new homes have changed the atmosphere of Montrose slightly, lending a more gentrified feel to the community.

What Makes Montrose Special?

Montrose is known as a true “Bohemian” area. Westheimer, the Montrose main street, is where Houston residents come to explore antique shops, shop at boutique stores, dine at their favorite local eateries and party at a bar. Even without shopping, Westheimer is an experience. Street artists and sidewalk vendors line the streets, so it’s a great place for people watching. Westheimer’s rambling sidewalks show one of the other features of the neighborhood that makes it popular. This is one of the most pedestrian friendly communities in Houston.

Montrose also has excellent education opportunities for its residents. The High School for the Performing Arts is one of the most prestigious high schools in the greater Houston area, and Lanier Middle School also ranks high. Montrose is home to St. Thomas University as well

The boundary lines of the Montrose District are Shepherd drive to the west, Buffalo Bayou to the north, the Southwest Freeway to the south, and Taft St to Tuam to the 527 spur to the east.  The Montrose District is composed of Hyde Park, Montrose and  78 other different subdivisions.  The subdivisions vary in size from 5 homes to 128 homes.  Each subdivision in the Montrose District has their unique characteristics and building restrictions.  What you end up with is an esoteric assortment of every style of housing and business resulting in a strong identity built up over its long history.
