Bellaire is surrounded by Houston, West University Place, and Southside Place in southwest Harris County. The city was founded in 1909 by William Wright Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin also persuaded horticulturist Edward Teas to start a nursery on Bellaire Blvd. Bellaire was zoned for residential and commercial. But the city’s emphasis has always been on residential development.
Bellaire is known as the “City of Homes” as the city is mostly residential, while there are offices along the 610 Loop within the city limits. In 2000 Bellaire was the 27th wealthiest location in Texas by per capita income with 15,642 people, 6,019 households, and 4,321 families residing in the city.
Bellaire has its own police and fire department. Bellaire schools are part of the Houston Indepenedent School District. Many of the lot sizes in Bellaire are larger than those in Houston. The city is renowned for its parks and recreation facilities. The city is an area in transition as many of the original small one story ranch style homes are being replaced with larger traditional two story homes. It is an area where neighbors meet at the local restaurants and churches in friendship.
The Bellaire Real Estate Market has remained strong. The average cost of a home in Bellaire last year was $750,000. The lowest priced home sold for $168,000, while the highest priced home sold for $3,000,000.
