The Houston Heights is one of the earliest planned communities in Texas. The Heights is located 4 miles northwest of downtown Houston just inside the inner-loop. The Heights still maintains the character of the early 1900’s. The tree-canopied esplanades and side streets dotted with wood homes with balconies, gables, and large porches give the area a small town feel.
The Houston Heights is still like a small town community. There are shops and businesses where third generation owners are continuing in their fathers footsteps. The neighborhood features homes which are built according to historical standards. The boulevard with its walking path in the middle is used as meeting grounds for the many residents. And the business area of the Heights located on 19th and 20th streets looks today just like it did 60 years ago.
In 1891 millionaire Oscar Martin Carter and a group of investors established the Omaha and South Texas Land Company. The company purchased 1,756 acres of land and established infrastructure, including alleys, parks, schools, streets and utilities. The Heights was founded as a streetcar suburb of Houston which attracted people who did not wish to live in the dense city. It had its own municipality until the City of Houston annexed the Heights in 1919.
The City of Houston operates parks and schools within and around the Houston Heights. The Heights Boulevard Park is unique in that it is located on the escapandes between 100-1900 Heights Boulevard. There are hike and bicycle trail, a playground, a lighted sports field, and a swimming pool. Love Community Center has an indoor gymnasium, meeting rooms, and a weight room.
Many of the original bungalows and traditional homes are still there nestled between the new homes. There are Victorian, New Orleans, traditional, and even a few modern homes among the many new homes being built. These beautiful homes with their arches and their angles are built by builders such as Harry James, Pyramio Builders, Whitestone Builders, Homefront LTD, Hartford Homes, Tricon Homes, JMD Enterprise, HFL Construction, Blue River Custom, Partners in Building, Wylie & Caruba, Sullivan Interests, David Weekley, Bill Jordan, Pyrimid Builders, and Distinctive Living.
These new homes are priced from $235,000 to $1,198,000. They vary in square footage from 1,299 to 4,609 square feet. The original homes sell from $112,000 to $620,000 for a home located on Heights Boulevard. The Heights is more than just the perfect location to get away from the traffic and big city atmosphere of Houston, it is literally a way of life for the residents.
