The innerloop neighborhood of Avalon Place was founded by Dr. William Thomas Dickey who came to Houston in the 1880’s.  He bought 460 acres of land that extended 1000 feet on each side of Kirby   Drive.  When the debt became to high he sold 300 acres of the low land.    This low land became the planned subdivision of River Oaks.  The building of Addicks dam and reservoir down river in 1945 controlled the flooding of this low land.   In the 1940’s Highland Village was a shooting range for the Buffalo Gun Club.  In February 1948 developer S.N. Adams carved Highland Village out of the A T.
