History
Bellaire was a 9,449 acre ranch when it was purchased by William Wright Baldwin in 1908. The town was most likely named for Bellaire, Ohio a town on the Burlington Railroad route. Mr. Baldwin was a vice president of Burlington Railroad. He was instrumental in having Bellaire Boulevard built from the site to Main Street in nearby Houston. The center of the Boulevard had an electric street car named the “Toonerville Trolley”. In 1926 the trolley was replaced with bus service. Bellaire was zoned for residential and commercial. Mr. Baldwin persuaded horticulturist Edward Teas to start a nursery on Bellaire Blvd. The city’s emphasis however has always been on residential development.
Location
Bellaire is surrounded by the cities of Houston and West University Place. Bellaire is an affluent city conveniently located near the Galleria, Downtown Houston, and the medical Center.
Housing
Bellaire is known as the “City of Homes” as the city is mostly residential. There are offices and business’s located along Bellaire Blvd and the 610 Loop within the city limits. In 2010 Bellaire was the 27th wealthiest location in Texas by per capita income with 16,855 people residing in the city.
Many of the lot sizes in Bellaire are larger than those in Houston. The city is renowned for its parks and recreation facilities. The city is an area in transition as many of the original small one story ranch style homes are being replaced with larger traditional two story homes. It is an area where neighbors meet at the local restaurants and churches in friendship. Bellaire has its own police and fire department. Bellaire schools are part of the HoustonIndepenedentSchool District.
The Bellaire Real Estate Market has remained strong. The average cost of a home in Bellaire last year was $750,000. The lowest priced home sold for $168,000, while the highest priced home sold for $3,000,000. Some of the more prestigious subdivisions located in Bellaire are Southdale, Teas Garden, Braebrun Country Club, Bellaire Oaks, Post Oak Plaza, Teasdale, Peaceful Valley and Warwick Village. Some of the many fine builders are Granit Builders, Bentley Custom Homes, Jonathan Marshall, Watermark Homes, Levitt Robbins, Lovett Homes, John Bass, Legion Builders, Scott Fraiser Homes, Lismar Builders, Rohe & Wright, and Bellaire Builders.
