In the 1940s, oilman Glenn H. McCarthy had a vision for an indoor shopping area with its own hotel. He was never able to see his concept come to fruition, but in the late 1960s, Gerald Hines picked up the idea, developing the Galleria, which opened on November 16, 1970. The shopping area, anchored by Neiman Marcus, was created to look like the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. When it opened, it had hanging chandeliers and an ice skating rink.

The mall went through several ownership changes in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and saw several major retailers come and go. However, in spite of changes, the mall has remained one of the most prestigious shopping areas in the country. Currently it is home to the only Prada and Tesla Motors stores in the entire state, and it draws 35 million visitors a year.

Yet the Galleria area is more than just the mall. As interest in the shopping are grew, the land around it also grew, with town houses, condos and single-family homes popping up all around the mall.

What Makes the Galleria /Uptown Park Area Special?

The offerings of the mall itself are one of the primary draws of the Galleria area. Where else can you live near some of the most prestigious shopping and dining options in Texas? In addition, the Galleria area also has the distinction of being in an excellent location. It is close to Highland Village Shopping Center, Greenway Plaza, Memorial Park, Loop 610, and minutes from downtown Houston.  The area also features Tanglewood Boulevard the gathering place for CEO’s who enjoy it’s mile long bike path and  jogging trail.

Galleria/Uptown Park Real Estate

If you were to take a drive through the residential areas of the Galleria area, you would find yourself marveling at the variety you see. This area has everything from Mediterranean villas to modern three-story homes. You’ll also find a range of high end condominiums and town homes for those who enjoy the low maintenance type of property.
You’ll find that prices vary significantly too. For a town home on Bering Dr, you may spend as little as $90,000, with a sprawling estate in Tanglewood costing over $3,995,000. The Larchmont subdivision is a popular one in the Galleria, with 1950s ranch style homes available for less than $400,000.
