Highland Village Area Homes For Sale
HistoryThe first homes in what is now the Highland Village Area were built in the early 1950s. In its early days, Highland Village Shopping Center was home to a few key retailers, including a pharmacy, service station, cafeteria and supermarket. These humble beginnings belied the fact that the Highland Village Shopping Center would grow to one of the most coveted retail areas in the greater Houston area. From the 1950s through recent years, the Highland Village Area , as a neighborhood, grew steadily, but the original homes stayed in place. As other neighborhoods grew around it, Highland Village maintained its 1950s persona. That has changed as the entire area began a transformation in the early 2000s. The 1950s ranch style homes are being torn down and replaced with custom designed two-story homes that are some of the most luxurious in the region. Recently, two new residential projects began in the area: Olympia at Willowick Park and 2929 Weslayan. Slated to open in 2014, Olympia at Willowick Park will offer 552 apartments housed in two mid-rise buildings and a handful of town homes, all surrounding a central park. The 2929 Weslayan project will be the tallest rental tower built in Houston since 1995, and it promises top-of-the-line amenities and breathtaking views. What Makes the Highland Village Area Special?Ask a resident of the Highland Village Area what makes the area special, and you’ll probably hear about the shopping. The 15-acre retail center houses Houston’s only Apple Flagship store, it’s only Sprinkles cupcake shop and the special edition Restoration Hardware store that people travel from throughout the U.S. This level of high-end retail stores has attracted the more affluent buyer to the Highland Village area, and the real estate in this uptown Houston community has changed to match this demographic. Residents of the Highland Village Area are in the Houston Independent School District, but many opt to send their children to one of the area’s two excellent private schools: St. John’s and River Oaks Baptist, both of which are known for academic excellence. Highland Village and the surrounding communities also benefit from the excellent location. Not only are these neighborhoods close to the Highland Village shopping area, but they’re also not far from the Galleria, downtown Houston and Greenway Plaza.
