History
Houston’s museums are not new players, but the Rice / Museum District as it stands today dates back to 1977, when the city realized that they needed to provide people with easier access to the city’s museums. Alexandra R. Marshall formed an organization, the Montrose Project, that worked to create a pedestrian-friendly district centered around the Museum of Fine Arts.
The Montrose Project eventually evolved into the Museum District Development Association of Houston. This group worked hard, and in 1989 the Museum District was officially recognized by the city. In 1994 the MDDAH dissolved, and it was followed by the Houston Museum District Association in 1997. The Rice University/Museum District is distinctive because of the museums that serve as the core of the area.
