River Oaks was established in the 1920s when Will and Mike Hogg and Hugh Potter bought a strip of farmland to the south of Buffalo Bayou. From its outset, River Oaks was designed to be a high-end, southern-style residential community. It was planted with oaks, azaleas and shrubs and carefully planned to provide its residents with all of the amenities they would need and expect.
Quickly it became one of the most expensive and exclusive Houston luxury neighborhoods. Houston annexed the community in 1927. Since that time, it has continued to draw the rich and famous of Houston and was ranked as the seventh most expensive housing blocks in the United States by Bloomberg Businessweek in 2011.
What Makes River Oaks Special?
The premier feature of this planned community is the exclusive River Oaks Country Club, where residents can play a round of golf on the Donald Ross-designed course or enjoy a round of tennis with their neighbors. River Oaks is also home to the River Oaks Shopping Center. This historic shopping area was designed by Hugh Prather and was one of the first retail centers in the country designed for automobile drivers. It was also the first shopping center in Houston. Today, it is home to the last historic movie theater in the city, and residents often frequent the River Oaks Theatre to see arthouse films.
River Oaks is served by the Houston Independent School District, but the majority of students who live in the community attend private school. Several excellent private schools, including both religious and non-religious options, operate in and around River Oaks.
