History

The Montrose District was created in 1911 by J. W. Link of the Houston Land Corporation, when he purchased 250 acres of land outside Houston. Mr. Link envisioned Montrose as a planned community and streetcar suburb of Houston. His main street Montrose Boulevard became the home of prominent Houston families such as the DeGeorges and the Lee Brothers. The Lee Brothers family home on Montrose Boulevard is now the administration building of St Thomas University. This colorful family was led by W Howard Lee who married Hollywood movie stars Hedi Lamar and Gene Tierney.

Location

The boundary lines of the Montrose District are Shepherd drive to the west, Buffalo Bayou to the north, the Southwest Freeway to the south, and Taft St to Tuam to the 527 spur to the east. The Montrose District is composed of Hyde Park, Montrose and 78 other different subdivisions. The subdivisions vary in size from 5 homes to 128 homes. Each subdivision in the Montrose District has their unique characteristics and building restrictions. What you end up with is an eclectic assortment of housing and business resulting in a unique identity built up over its long history.

Housing

Montrose is a legendary neighborhood where intellectuals, artists, and business professionals live in harmony. The Montrose District is considered one of the most demographically diverse areas of Houston. There are renovated mansions, bungalows with wide porches, and cottages located along tree-lined boulevards. Montrose is one of the more pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods in Houston.

The main street of the Montrose District is Westheimer, where antique stores, restaurants, shops, and bars offer something for everyone. Just walking down Westheimer can be an experience in itself. On any given day there is a combination of sidewalk vendors, artists, and street people passing by. Houston’s prestigious High School for the Performing Arts, Lanier Middle School and St. Thomas University add to the mix. Residents of Montrose say they would not live anywhere else. Montrose has a certain Bohemian lifestyle for those who want an alternative lifestyle.

The new homes and town homes are being built by MDGI, Decordi Realty, Tricon, A-1 Builders, Lovett, Alquimia, JHL Enterprise, Tremont, Perry, The Vistas, Larry Davis, Silverstone, Farb Homes, Parra Design Group, On Point Development, Silverstri, and Audubon Builders. Depending on size and type the prices vary from $150,000 to a high of $920,000. Montrose, truly has something for everyone.
