Oak Forest was established in 1947 by Oak Forest Realty Corporation, owned by Frank Sharp, a developer who would later establish Sharpstown. The first house, which served as a sales office, was built at the corner of Golf and Fisher Dr. Almost all of the first houses were sold to World War II veterans for $8,000-$10,000. Sufficient acreage in Oak Forest was set aside for churches, parks and schools. Areas were also reserved for commercial development and this accounts for the many grocery stores, cleaners, service stations, etc., which are located on W. 43rd St. and Ella Blvd.
Oak Forest is located just north of innerloop Houston, and only 6 miles from downtown Houston. This Houston neighrbohood is surrounded by schools, parks, bayous, and churches.
Among Houston House listings Oak Forest stands out with its small town atmosphere. Many of the original one story ranch style homes have been remodeled. They are priced from $134,000 to $340,000. In the last 5 years Oak Forest has seen two story homes build by Venetian Custom Homes, Blue River Custom Homes, Hatteras Homes, Lancaster, Miller Enterprises, Intown Homes, Sabo Custom Builders, and Hogan Builders. These homes cost between $400,000 to $740,000 and are 2,300 to 4,800 square feet in size.
