Real Estate in the Southeast area of Houston will benefit from the expansion of the Panama Canal. The addition of new locks and gates which allow larger ships to pass through which will cut shipping costs and add container tonnage to the Port of Houston. Companies such as Wal-Mart have already built new facilities close to the port in anticipation of the increased container traffic.
Houston is the number one destination for cargo ships leaving the Canal.
Juan Sosa, president of the U.S.-Panama Business Council and a former Panamanian ambassador to the United States said. “The No. 1 destination of cargo ships crossing the canal is the Port of Houston. Houston already is investing about $1 billion to prepare physically for the larger container ships that will cross at Panama and turn north to the United States.”
New home communities will be needed to house the increased number of people working at the Port and related industries. New Railroad lines will be needed to move the cargo from the ships to their final destination. Existing train intersections may need overpasses built to enable train traffic to flow quicker. With the population for the greater Houston area projected to double by 2035. This area will see significant growth.
