There is something for everyone in the Woodlands.
The Woodlands has grown by leaps and bounds since its founding in 1974. The thriving community boasts a population of just over 93 thousand residents as of the 2010 census, showing growth over the 2000 census figures of just fewer than 56 thousand. Positioned on Interstate 45, it is easily accessible for commuters who work in the Houston area. Covering an area of almost 44 square miles, only a small portion of the area is water, making it predominantly usable land with many shade trees and natural forest.
In 1994, the Urban Land Institute gave The Woodlands a Special Award for Excellence. In keeping with these early measures to build a community that is thriving for both residents and businesses, the area now features two movie theaters, over a hundred different restaurant choices, and dancing waterfalls along the Woodlands Waterway. Music lovers will enjoy the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, which spotlights the Houston Symphony during the summer, and also brings in many other bands and musical acts throughout the year.
The Woodlands Mall borders Market Street, creating a pedestrian district for shopping and enjoying an old-fashioned Main Street type of environment. The shopping area borders the waterway for a unique atmosphere, and boasts a movie theater, small shops and restaurants. In addition to this inviting area, each of the smaller communities throughout The Woodlands has its own shopping district with grocery, banking, fuel and shopping destinations.
Three separate school districts service the various areas of The Woodlands, with several public schools accessible in the area. For families seeking a private school environment, there are several options within The Woodlands, making transportation and scheduling easier. Students seeking to pursue local colleges can choose from Lone Star College or Our Lady of the Lake University to attend classes within The Woodlands or any of a number of universities and schools throughout Texas.
There are nine separate villages in The Woodlands, each with various lots and styles of homes. Most villages include housing areas for the 55 and over population, creating an environment of relaxation, as well as an area of single family homes, multi-family environments and gated communities. With so much versatility, there are neighborhoods for virtually everyone to enjoy the casual, comfortable environment. The average home price is $265,000, with homes selling for less in some communities and more in areas such as some of the gated communities that feature sprawling estates with several thousand square feet of custom living space and elaborate stone and marble decor. For those aging family members who want comfort and support, senior living communities bring the best of both worlds with the beauty of The Woodlands environment.
